講座簡介:
Individual life course behavior is commonly interacting with macro contexts and historical events. One prominent example is China’s one child policy on the birth outcome among Han Chinese. Under this policy, the number of births is decided by the state. However, individuals voiced their fertility intentions vias the timing of giving births. Due to the traditional son preference, the empirical analyses show that there is a significant sex difference in the only birth interval for Han couples with only one child, especially during the period when the policy was strictly enforced. Further, additional analysis illustrates that for Han couples with more than one child, there is no significant difference in the first birth interval, compared with non-Han couples. This indicates that there is prenatal sex selection in comtemporary China under the one child policy.
